Available Positions:

Transfusion Service
Full time days, Sunday-Thursday

Summary
Act as the primary liaison for transfusion services throughout the hospital and provide exemplary care for our donor colony.

Responsibilities

  • Order and stock supplies needed for ward
  • Clean and disinfect the wards thoroughly; clean and maintain transfusion suite
  • Responsible for general care of the donors including but not limited to trimming nails, cleaning ears, brushing teeth, grooming, bathing, weighing
  • Socialize and exercise donors
  • Restrain animals for blood collection and procedures
  • Set up and maintain all equipment needed for blood collection
  • Monitor health and well being of donor colony
  • Order canine and feline blood products as needed
  • Maintain canine and feline blood inventory
  • Maintain computer logs on animal health status and blood inventory
  • Utilize AS 400 program and AMC portal
  • Coordinate and assist veterinarians with routine donor examinations
  • Contact and schedule volunteer donors for blood collection
  • Work with Manager of Medicine Nursing Services to coordinate LVT assistance when needed
  • Cross train in all areas of Medicine and other areas of the hospital
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have at least 2 years experience working with animals  
  • Must be highly organized, with basic computer skills
  • Must be able to follow detailed protocols, as well as neatly and correctly fill out paperwork and maintain medical records

Surgery
Full-time, days

Summary
Provide support to the Orthopedic Surgical Service

Responsibilities

  • Assist in many aspects of treatments and patient care, including physical exams, admissions and discharges, bandage changes, surgical site evaluation and suture removal.
  • Initiate appointments, communicate with clients both in hospital and via phone regarding issues and concerns including post-op progress, visitation, discharge, peri-operative care, etc.
  • Record and alert staff members regarding presence of swelling/effusion, incision complications, ROM, stability, patient comfort and any questions from owners regarding surgical site, medications, etc.
  • Technician will work with anesthesia staff for safe administration of anesthesia, performance of local anesthetic techniques, catheter placement, pre-medication, induction and maintenance of anesthesia and recovery.
  • Technician will work with operating room staff to facilitate the scheduling of surgical cases, maintenance of equipment and of ordering of orthopedic supplies.
  • Technician will work with other service technicians to organize and coordinate events related to their particular service including appointments, anesthesia and the delegation of duties to the service assistant.
  • This position includes training in the operating room and the care and use of athroscopic equipment.
  • Must have NYS Veterinary Technician’s license or permit.
  • High level of understanding of the workings of an orthopedics surgical service, including role of referring vets and all issues specific to orthopedics, i.e. physical therapy, wound management, bandaging, surgical equipment set-up, care and troubleshooting, etc.
  • A strong knowledge of anesthetics and protocols as well as familiarity with epidurals, local nerve blocks and clipping parameters is required.
  • Must have knowledge of aseptic preparation and techniques. Experience within an orthopedic operating room environment is preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of common post-op complications, care/monitoring of critical cases and familiarity with CPCR techniques
  • Applicant must have the ability to remain composed in stressful and emergency situations and be skillfully organized.
  • Applicant must have the ability communicate with internal and external customers at all levels.
Critical Care
30/40 week schedule; 10:00pm-9:00am

Summary
Use superior nursing and technical skills to assist and support vets in monitoring/managing patients and contributing to accurate and efficient functioning of the unit

Responsibilities

  • Accurate and timely completion of all necessary technical procedures and treatments, with strict adherence to ICU and hospital protocols
  • Prioritize treatments and procedures according to the needs of the patients and the unit
  • Involvement in cardiopulmonary arrests and the stabilization of critical patients
  • Accurate record keeping
  • Effective, appropriate and compassionate communications with owners      
  • Assisting and instructing interns and residents regarding ICU policies and protocols
  • Provide nursing support to Emergency Services as caseload and time permit
     
  • Must have NYS veterinary technician’s license/permit or eligibility 
  • One to two years experience as a licensed vet technician with critical care experience
  • Demonstrated ability to provide quality nursing care, technical services and teamwork                   
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding environment, handling multiple tasks with competing deadlines while paying close attention to details
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, demonstrating a high level of initiative
  • Must show proficiency in patient handling and monitoring, supportive therapy, treatments and procedures
  • Must be flexible and have the ability to accommodate shift work in a unit that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Cardiology
Full Time, Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 am-5:00 pm

Summary
Provide assistance to technicians and veterinarians on Cardiology team

Responsibilities

  • Restrain patients for echocardiograms                      
  • Assist technicians and veterinarians with appointments               
  • Maintain catheter inventory                                  
  • Communicate clearly with clients, technicians and vets  
  • Maintain the cleanliness of Echocardiogram suite                          
  • Cross-train in Diagnostic Imaging and all areas of Medicine Department
  • Provide accurate record keeping and ICU/ES data entry    
  • All other related duties as assigned by manager in charge
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have 2 years animal handling experience and be able to restrain all species                                                                    
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work successfully as part of a team
  • Must have ability to remain composed in stressful and emergency situations
  • Must be flexible about working additional hours when necessary
  • Ability to communicate clearly with clients, technicians and vets            
  • Must be able to follow detailed protocols as well as neatly and correctly complete paperwork as necessary

Billing

Summary

 Monitor day to day collection follow-up of client accounts

Responsibilities

  • Place weekly phone calls to clients with delinquent accounts
  • Assist in making arrangements for payment
  • Prepare agency reports on a monthly basis, and provide agency with client documentation
  • Maintain accurate records of conversations, payment arrangements and special requests
  • Make adjustments to accounts in computer system
  • Interact and communicate successfully with clients and all staff
  • All other related duties as assigned 
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college very helpful
  • Computer literacy and skills with Excel necessary
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clients and staff
  • Aptitude for figures and ability to operate adding machine

Oncology Department of Internal Medicine

Summary

Provide exemplary nursing care to all oncology patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all medical and nursing procedures on the Oncology service, including assisting with procedures, patient care, venipuncture, peripheral catheter placement, monitoring and administering sedation and anesthesia
  • Assist with diagnostic tests and analysis
  • Communicate effectively with clients and referral veterinarians; record medical histories and inquire about symptoms; assist in scheduling procedures; educate clients and provide advice and support to families
  • Provide instruction to trainees rotating through the Oncology service
  • Provide backup for and cross-train in other departments as required, including Radiation Therapy, Transfusion Medicine, and Diagnostic Imaging
  • Attend and participate in scheduled patient rounds
  • Operate and maintain medical equipment; stock and order supplies
  • All associated nursing duties as assigned
  • Must have NYS Veterinary Technician’s license
  • Two years minimum LVT experience
  • Must have animal handling experience, be able to restrain all species and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must have excellent technical skills, especially in the areas of venipuncture and anesthesia
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective, respectful working relationships
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with clients, technicians and vets
  • Must have the desire and ability to become proficient in chemotherapy safety, including closed system drug transfer device
  • Special consideration given to individuals wishing to attain board certification through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) Academy of Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians (AIMVT).
