The Animal Medical Center's Graduate Veterinarian Clinical Practices Program was established to serve those veterinarians who want advanced clinical training in small animal medicine and surgery, but who are unable to participate in a normal internship or residency.

Veterinarians from all over the world take advantage of the large volume and diversity of medical and surgical cases at the AMC, one of the largest postgraduate veterinary medical training programs in the world and to enhance their clinical preparation. All small animal medical and surgical specialities are represented by our staff, including internal medicine, nephrology, gastroenterology, cardiology, exotics, neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology, emergency medicine, radiology, and endocrinology, as well as orthopedic, neurologic, and soft tissue surgery. In addition, the pathology department provides strong support in the areas of clinical, microscopic, and immunologic pathology.

The Animal Medical Center's professional staff includes over 28 board-certified veterinarians, 28 interns, 19 residents, and 200 support and administrative personnel. Emphasis is placed on clinical training, and the teaching experience of the staff provides an intensive and challenging learning atmosphere for the veterinarians in the program.

Applications should be received three months before the requested period of training. Although there are no fixed time limits for the veterinarians participation, a minimum of two weeks in a rotation is strongly recommended. Each veterinarian is assigned to the service area or discipline of his or her preference (space permitting). It is important that participants be certain of their choices when applying. Also, we ask that specific requests be notated so that each program can be personalized. Once an assignment has begun, there can be no alterations. Since services maintain different work schedules (i.e., Sunday through Thursday, Monday through Friday, Tuesday through Saturday), the starting day is important. Please be flexible regarding scheduled rotations.

Participants are active in discussions on the medical service to which they are assigned. As much involvement as permitted by law is expected, including participation in outpatient and hospital rounds. (New York State Law prohibits the practice of veterinary medicine, including diagnosis, treatment and the prescription of medications without a license.) Participants my attend regularly scheduled medical and surgical morning lectures and clinical and gross pathology conferences as well as continuing education seminars. Great emphasis is placed on case discussion, including disease processes, differential diagnoses, and management of medical and surgical problems. An average of 10 to 12 hours per day is spent with the assigned service. The pathology rotation includes practical experience in necropsy and microscopic and clinical pathology.
