Externship Programs
Senior veterinary students are invited to participate in the observation of clinics, medical and surgical rounds, surgeries, special procedures, radiology, cardiac and abdominal ultrasounds. Participants are urged to attend the many lectures and special events sponsored by The AMC's Department of Education.

Due to strict NewYork State license laws, participants will not be allowed any hands-on training. You will, however, be exposed to all aspects of the clinic and will participate as a working member of the hospital. Candidates must be a third or fourth year student in good academic standing in an AVMA-accredited school of Veterinary Medicine and be recommended by an Extern Coordinator or Dean. There are additional requirements for international candidates.

The program is conducted year-round except from June 1 to July 20. Requests for specific rotation times will be matched as closely as possible, however assignments are made on a first-come, first serve basis. Typically, students stay between two to four weeks. You will be expected to be in the hospital five days of the week, with each day lasting approximately 10-12 hours. Housing is available for a small fee.A limited number of studio apartments, located two blocks from the hospital, are available for $20 per night.

Summer Volunteer Program
The volunteer program is designed specifically for firstand second-year veterinary students. Because of its size and scope,The AMC has unique resources and is in a position to provide clinical experience and observation to students of veterinary medicine. Many veterinary colleges require small animal clinical experience as part of their programs. Therefore, a formal program at The AMC is of great benefit to students needing to comply with this qualification. We provide the best experience possible for our volunteers.Volunteers must commit to a minimum stay of four weeks between July 1 and July 20. Services are assigned in two-week blocks based upon student preferences (when available). Students are expected to make their own housing arrangements.
