Internal Medicine Residency

The Internal Medical Residency program at the Animal Medical Center offers qualified candidates the opportunity to continue their education with a busy and diversified program including rotations and exposure to a large and varied amount of case material. Residents also work closely with senior personnel who have specialized or have specific interest in the areas of Cardiology, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Oncology, Radiology, Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine.

The Medical Residency consists of a two-year appointment. The first year is diversified and the second year is more highly concentrated in one or more of the above described areas of interest. In addition, during the end of the first or beginning of the second year, the resident has the opportunity to run his/her own service for two to three months. Following the completion of internship or its equivalent and two years of medical residency, a candidate is eligible for application to the examination of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Emphasis is placed on dynamic ward rounds with the medical staff to supervise and direct case discussion. Ample opportunity exists, however, for the resident to manage his/her own cases and to teach interns. A comprehensive nursing service is responsible for the bulk of routine treatments. The AMC has a large, diverse caseload of approximately 50,000 visits per year.

The Medical Residency is supported by staff members, 28 of whom are board certified specialists in the following areas: Cardiology (2), Neurology (2), Ophthalmology, Pathology, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Surgery, Radiology, Emergency/Critical Care, and Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine.

The Animal Medical Center is fortunate to have state-of-the-art equipment including a fourth-generation CT scanner, Cobalt Radiation Therapy Room, 2D ultrasonography, color-flow Doppler unit, video-endoscopy, blood pressure equipment, two X-ray rooms and a fully equipped Intensive Care Unit.

Other features of the residency program are the numerous lectures, conferences and rounds with staff. It is our intention to provide each medicine resident with a one- to two- month block for scholarly activity and/or external rotation. In addition, some time off will be provided to study for ACVIM examinations. Over the past several years, the majority of individuals who have completed an AMC Internal Medicine Residency have gone on to Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. In 1996, all four residents who took the general examination passed on their first attempt. The three who took the certifying exam in Internal Medicine passed on their first attempt.

The Medical Residencies are demanding and the residents are expected to work long hours. It is expected that medical residents will execute a research project and publish at least one article for submission to a professional journal. Appointment to the 2nd year of the residency is dependent upon successful completion of the 1st year and approval of the staff.
