The AMC General Services Department
The Animal Medical Center in New York City is a nonprofit veterinary center that has been a national leader in animal care since 1910. As an academic veterinary hospital, The AMC promotes the health and well-being of companion animals through advanced treatment, research and education.
The AMC provides routine and emergency medical care for pets, and also offers treatment for animals suffering from complicated diseases. The staff, which includes more than 90 veterinarians, utilizes an interdisciplinary team approach and combines expertise in 17 different specialties. The facility is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Generating new knowledge is a vital part of The AMC mission, so diagnostics and treatment are always based on the latest research and technology. As a teaching hospital, The AMC uses the knowledge gained here to train future veterinary leaders through intensive postgraduate internship and residency programs.
A variety of free or subsidized services are available to those in need through the Frank V.D. Lloyd Fund for Guide Dogs, Seniors’ Animal Veterinary Effort, and Patient Assistance Fund. In addition, The AMC offers a Pet Outreach Program as well as counseling and bereavement services.

Clinical Investigation (Clinical Trials) -- The Caspary Research Institute conducts clinical investigation of naturally occurring disease in companion animals to enable more effective diagnosis, advanced medical and surgical treatment and prevention of disease in all pets. Joint efforts are made with those studying the same illnesses in humans. Among our collaborators are:
- New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center
- Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
- The Rockefeller University
- New York University Medical Center
- Yale University, Cornell University, Ohio State University, and many colleges of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.
|

Investigations are conducted by observing and treating naturally occurring disease. The Animal Medical Center does not induce disease for research and does not maintain any laboratory animals for research.

Community Outreach -- The AMC meets special needs in several ways:
- Social workers facilitate bereavement groups and counsel pet owners who are emotionally distressed regarding their animal's health.
- The Seniors' Animal Veterinary Effort was established in 1975 to provide free or subsidized health care for the pets of the indigent elderly. S.A.V.E. funds support emergency veterinary services for needy senior citizens.
- In 1981, The Animal Medical Center sponsored the nation's first conference on pet loss, sparking programs around the world and the founding of the Carola Warburg Rothschild Society for the Human-Animal Bond.
