New Rehabilitation and Fitness Service Debuts, A First in New York City; Renee Shumway is City's First Certified Rehabilitation Practitioner |

The Animal Medical Center celebrates the commencement of its new Rehabilitation and Fitness Service - the only facility of its kind in New York City - throughout the week of March 19 with previews for referring veterinarians, special friends of The AMC, and media.

The service also boasts the only Certified Rehabilitation Practitioner for animals in New York City - Renee Shumway received her certification from the University of Tennessee in collaboration with Northeast Seminars. She reports to Dr. Jason Fusco, DVM, ACVS, and Dr. Deirdre Chiaramonte, DVM, ACVIM.

The all-new Rehabilitation and Fitness suite features 2 underwater treadmills, a land-based treadmill, a hydrotherapy tub with whirlpool jets, deep-tissue ultrasound, electro-hydrotherapy (mild stimulation for muscles and limbs), low-level laser therapy, and electrical stimulation.

According to the Rehabilitation and Fitness team, the benefits of rehabilitation extend to animals that are elderly, arthritic and obese, particularly in the areas of weight reduction; increased mobility, flexibility and muscle strength; improved muscle and neurologic function; the reduction of pain; and decreased post-surgery recovery time.
