Rehabilitation and Fitness Service

The all-new Animal Medical Center Rehabilitation and Fitness Service, the only facility of its kind in New York City, is now providing innovative and state-of-the-art therapies for cats, dogs, birds and other exotic animals.

Professional Leadership -

The Service is directed by a team of health professionals who are expert in the rehabilitative care of animal companions. They are Deirdre Chiaramonte, DVM, ACVIM; and Renee Shumway, LVT, CCRP. Ms. Shumway is the only Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner in New York City.

The Service Offers Many Benefits -

The benefits of rehabilitation extend to animals that are elderly, arthritic, post-surgical, neurologically impaired, athletic and obese. It is particularly effective in the areas of weight reduction; increased mobility, flexibility and muscle strength; improved muscle and neurological function; reduction of pain; and decreased post-surgery recovery time.

A Wide Range Of Therapies -

Our Service specializes in non-invasive therapies to prevent the need for surgery, and in cases where surgery has been performed, it helps to accelerate and achieve a more complete recovery. Post-operative rehabilitation to reduce pain and suffering, and to speed healing, is begun as quickly as possible after surgery, often while the patient is still at The AMC.
For paralyzed animals, we try to prevent muscle atrophy, improve circulation, and keep muscles flexible. All of these therapies provide relief from pain and at the same time encourage the patient's use of paralyzed limbs.

Unique Geriatric Treatments -

We also treat geriatric animals suffering from common, painful ailments such as muscle atrophy, Cushing's disease, back pain and arthritis. They receive massage, heat therapy, ultrasound, hydrotherapy, and exercise via land and underwater treadmills.

Treatments For Obesity And Diabetes -

Of particular interest is a clinic for obese and/or diabetic patients. Overweight animals cannot run with their owners and engage in other strenuous physical activities because they are at high risk for injuries. Besides helping them lose weight safely by means of equipment such as our underwater treadmill, we also establish healthy diets and exercise regimens for them.
The fully equipped facility, which is located on the hospital's 8th floor, features:
  • Two underwater treadmills
  • A land-based treadmill
  • A hydrotherapy tub with whirlpool jets
  • Deep-tissue ultrasound
  • Electro-hydrotherapy (mild stimulation for muscles and limbs)
  • Low-level laser therapy and electrical stimulation
By increasing an animal's physical health, our Service restores a zest for life that pain and illness may have diminished or eliminated entirely.
