Advanced Renal Therapies Symposium

Advanced Renal Therapies Symposium 2010

March 11-14, 2010
New York City

As organizers of the 4th Bi-Annual Advanced Renal Therapies Symposium, we invite you to attend the upcoming conference.

dialysis machinesOver the years, we have seen tremendous growth in the field of veterinary hemodialysis. Our goal for the 2010 conference is to continue to provide introductory information to people new to dialysis or wishing to start a dialysis unit. In addition, veterinary dialysis is moving beyond mere safety issues, and the program has a half-day session on efficacy. Measuring the adequacy of dialysis is becoming easier with new technology that is available, and understanding urea kinetics is of paramount importance to the dialysis nephrologist.

Keynote Speakers:

Thomas Depner, MD, University of California, Davis
Dr. Depner is the author of numerous scientific papers and book chapters, with a focus on urea kinetics in hemodialysis. He is the author of the book Prescribing Hemodialysis: A Guide to Urea Modeling. He will be speaking about Urea Kinetics and Adequacy of Dialysis.

Stephanie Smith, DVM, DACVIM, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Dr. Smith is well published on hematologic disorders of companion animals and is an expert in coagulation and hemostatis. She will be speaking about Anticoagulation.

Information for Residents, Interns and Students:

Conference registration is free for residents, interns and students. We cannot guarantee housing for residents this year. Contact our Continuing Education department for details. The limited housing we do have will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Abstract Presentations

Conference Adjourns: approximately 1 pm

During this conference, we have a variety of laboratories designed to demonstrate the principles discussed in the lectures. All of the labs will be held on Saturday, March 13, at Animal Medical Center. The vascular access lab will be offered only once, at 7:15 am and will take most attendees about 30 minutes to complete. The other labs will be offered several times throughout the day to allow small groups to interact with the presenter around the machine. These labs will last approximately 1.5 hours. Each attendee will only be able to attend 4 labs. There is no additional fee to attend the labs, but lab space is limited and is anticipated to fill up rapidly.

Laboratories: Preliminary Schedule

Title
Vascular access In this lab, participants can practice Seldinger and surgical techniques for catheter placement.
Hemodialysis Part 1: Clearance and Urea Kinetics
*THIS LAB IS FULL
This lab is designed to show how certain variables affect dialyzer clearance, how to manipulate clearance, and measuring clearance.

Hemodialysis Part 2: Blood Flow Issues - Catheter and Circuit
*THIS LAB IS FULL

This lab is designed to explore blood flow issues in the catheter and extracorporeal circuit, including how to measure blood flow and recirculation.
Hemodialysis Part 3: Compartments This lab is designed to illustrate differential clearance from different body compartments.
CRRT lab: Prisma This lab is designed to introduce participants to the Prisma CRRT machine.
CRRT lab: PrismaFlex This lab is designed to introduce participants to the PrismaFlex CRRT machine.
Apheresis: Spectra Optia This lab will demonstrate the Spectra Optia Apheresis machine for therapeutic plasma exchange.

Locations:

Griffis Faculty Club, 521 E. 68th Street, NYC
Animal Medical Center, 510 E. 62nd Street, NYC

Highlights for 2010:

Urea kinetics - Friday morning session
Anticoagulation - Friday afternoon session
Debate: Is IHD or CRRT superior? - Thursday lunch session
