A Tribute for Albus Dumblekitty

[Photo of Albus] In October of 2007, my boyfriend, Angus, and I decided to adopt two kittens. We had saved money and planned a budget so that we could take proper care of them and were thrilled when we finally brought home a tabby named Walter, and a little tuxedo named Albus.

We fell in love with both our kittens, but I felt a special connection with Albus. He loved to be cradled in my arms with his belly up, and purred easily and so loudly that he could be heard from the next room. During the day, Albus was full of energy, and every night he would curl up above my head and purr me to sleep. Angus and I loved him and Walter dearly.

One night this February, Walter woke us up with an alarmed "meow". Albus had crashed into our bedside table and was acting disoriented, so we rushed him to our local animal emergency hospital. At first, he seemed to have recovered from the accident, but we soon learned that Albus had had a seizure and needed to be put on oxygen. Angus and I spent hours crying and holding each other, waiting to learn our kitten’s fate. At eight that morning, the veterinarian told us that Albus was in severe pain and the best choice was to end his suffering. We did what we knew was right and gently pet our kitten as he passed away.

That terrible night took a toll on us, both emotionally and financially, though we were lucky enough to have planned ahead for veterinary expenses. We posted Albus’ story on our favorite online community and were amazed by the outpouring of kindness. Within a week, so many wonderful people had made donations that we had more than enough money to cover the bill. We knew immediately that we wanted to give the extra funds to an organization that cares for animals and the people who love them. We soon learned of The Animal Medical Center and decided it was the perfect choice.

We are so glad to make a gift in honor of our beloved Albus Dumblekitty, and we are grateful to all those who helped us when we really needed it. We miss our little kitten every day, and we know his brother, Walter, does too. Wherever Albus is now, he must be happy to know that people can be so kind, and that there are places like The AMC to help animals like him.
