New Clinical Trial at The Animal Medical Center

Intestinal Probiotic Agent for Canine Chronic Kidney Disease Clinical Trial

We are enrolling dogs with chronic kidney disease into a clinical study designed to evaluate a medication for treating kidney disease. This clinical trial is designed to determine whether this treatment results in improvement including quality of life in affected dogs.

What is this trial intended to provide?

Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition that is often minimally responsive to therapies. Standard treatments include special diets and certain medications that are intended to slow down the progression of disease or treat clinical signs. In general, standard therapies cannot stop the progression of disease.

The purpose of this study is to find out if a particular medication called an INTESTINAL PROBIOTIC, will improve the blood test values and quality of life. An intestinal probiotic agent has the potential to bind toxins that build up in the bloodstream as a result of the kidney disease and allow them to be eliminated by the body.

Principal Investigator at The AMC
Cathy Langston, DVM, DACVIM, Head of the Nephrology, Urology and Hemodialysis Unit

To be eligible for this study, your dog must:
1. Be older than 1 year of age with moderate to severe kidney disease
2. Eat Hill's K/D diet predominantly
3. Not be losing weight or have a life threatening disease.

Medical Protocol
At enrollment, each dog will randomly be assigned to receive either the probiotic agent or a placebo (sugar pill) which will be administered by mouth once per day. Neither the AMC staff involved nor the owner will know which pill is the placebo until the end of the trial. In addition, other standard therapies that your pet would normally receive for this condition are permitted to continue.

Patient Monitoring
Pets are monitored closely over the course of a year and will receive comprehensive medical evaluations designed to help assure the health of each animal.

Medical Costs
This clinical trial pays for a substantial portion of the health care dedicated to treating chronic kidney disease. However, the initial staging is at the owner's expense and may be performed by your regular vet

If you believe your pet may fit into this study, please call the appointment desk at 212 838-8100 or 212 329-7053 and ask for a new patient nephrology visit with Dr. Langston for initial staging
