Staff Veterinarian

The Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Service at the Animal Medical Center is now interviewing for a staff emergency doctor position open immediately.

Our department is comprised of 6 criticalists, 4 internship-trained emergency doctors, 6 residents, 22 technicians, and 10 assistants. Additionally, AMC houses staff veterinarians boarded in Cardiology, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, and Dentistry. The close interaction among these various services creates an atmosphere of dynamic clinical training and experience. Our emergency room (ER) is at the hospital’s center, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has an active caseload of over 14,000 visits per year.

The staff emergency doctors play a paramount and integral role in our department. The ER doctors are responsible for primary receiving of emergent pets presenting to the ER, oversight of the interns rotating through the emergency service, and care of all pets hospitalized in the ER and intensive care unit when on overnight duty. The ER doctors rotate through 4 shifts: daytime (25%), fast track (25%), swing (25%), and overnight (25%) and share responsibilities in the ER with the criticalists and ECC residents. The ER doctors are encouraged to attend all cage rounds in the Intensive Care Ward with the criticalists and residents and are invited to participate in resident rounds which are held weekly and which include morbidity/mortality, journal club, and board review.

Our staff ER position is demanding but extremely gratifying. Efficiency, diplomacy, patience and confidence are essential character traits for our doctors, as are both a desire to teach and to be taught. We encourage our ER staff doctors to participate in both internal and external continuing education opportunities and to stay apprised of current literature as it applies to ECC.

Completion of a small animal rotating internship and current New York State licensure are required. Additional details about this position can be obtained by contacting Dr. Jennifer Prittie, Department Head, Emergency and Critical Care, or call 212-329-8655.

The Animal Medical Center offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits including medical/dental insurance, CE reimbursement, tuition assistance, retirement plans, paid time off, pet care discounts and more.
