Necropsy Technician

The Animal Medical Center is looking for a Full Time Necropsy Technician to assist the Pathologist and Supervisor with general duties such as performing necropsies and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities and Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Receive, troubleshoot necropsy submissions (often involves communication with AMC doctors)
  • Logging in necropsy cases into Idexx and AMC databases
  • Setting up for necropsy procedures
  • Assisting with necropsy procedures including dissection of organ systems and preparing for cosmetic necropsies
  • Assisting with trimming of formalin fixed tissues
  • Uploading digital photos
  • Disposal of bodies, as necessary
  • Responsible for thoroughly cleaning necropsy room including sinks, tabletops, instruments, floor, jars/containers, band saw, and daily hosing down
  • Stocking, organization of necropsy room
  • Handling formalin containers, formalin waste disposal, decalcification waste disposal
  • Reducing size of archived formalin fixed tissues
  • Disposing of non-needed formalin fixed tissues
  • Organization of freezer specimens on 7th floor
  • Troubleshoot rabies submissions (paperwork is often incomplete or not filled out)
  • Communicate with Dept of Health regarding rabies submissions and results
  • Potentially logging in surgical biopsy/necropsy results to AMC database (Filemaker) for ease in identifying cases for clinical research
  • Pulling blocks from our archives for teaching and research (retrospective studies)

All qualified applicants must be able to:

  • Lift 50 pounds
  • Must be able to take written and oral directions
  • Must be able to communicate effectively
  • Must have basic computer skills
