The Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) department at the Animal Medical Center (AMC) is seeking a full time Staff Emergency Doctor.
The staff emergency doctor will play a paramount and integral role in our department. The ER doctors are responsible for primary receiving of emergent pets presenting to the ER, oversight of the interns rotating through the emergency service, and care of all pets hospitalized in the ER and ICU when on overnight duty. The ER doctors rotate through 4 shifts: daytime (25%), fast track (25%) swing (25%) and overnight (25%) and share responsibilities in the ER with the boarded criticalists and ECC residents. The ER doctors are encouraged to attend all cage rounds in the Intensive Care Ward (ICU) with the criticalists and residents and are invited to participate in weekly resident rounds comprised of morbidity/mortality rounds, journal club and board review.
The staff ER job is demanding but extremely gratifying. Efficiency, diplomacy, patience and confidence are essential character traits for our doctors, as are both a desire to teach and to be taught. We encourage our ER staff doctors to participate in both internal and external continuing education opportunities and to stay apprised of current literature as it applies to ECC.
The Emergency & Critical Care department is comprised of 7 criticalists, 4 internship-trained emergency doctors, 6 residents, 2 ECC specialty interns, and 22 technicians. Additionally, the AMC houses staff veterinarians boarded in Cardiology, Neurology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Pathology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Dentistry. The close interaction among these various services creates an atmosphere of dynamic clinical training and experience. Our emergency room (ER) is at the hospital’s center, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has an active caseload of over 16,000 visits per year.
Completion of a small animal rotating internship and current New York State licensure are required.
