The efficacy of isosorbide in the treatment of first time CHF in dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease

Purpose

Dogs who develop congestive heart failure require intensive treatment to resolve lung fluid (congestion) and restore normal breathing. A drug called isosorbide dinitrate is used to treat people with heart disease, appears safe for dogs, but its efficacy has not been proven in the canine.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this study, dogs must meet several criteria:

  • Have first onset of congestive heart failure caused by chronic degenerative mitral valve disease
  • Must not be receiving a nitrate drug for therapy
