Thank you to all of our speakers and attendees for joining us at this year’s 6th Annual One Health Conference hosted by the Animal Medical Center! We had over 500 people in attendance as our speakers discussed human and veterinary approaches to the physical rehabilitation of chronic diseases.
This FREE conference is hosted by the Ann and Charles Johnson One Health Institute at the Animal Medical Center. We were joined by veterinary specialists in Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation alongside human physicians from Weill Cornell Medical Center, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), and Kaiser San Rafael Medical Center.

Dr. Wakshlag is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition and is a Founding Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. He joined the faculty at Cornell in 2006. His research interests include obesity management and nutritional intervention for the canine athlete.
Caroline A. Andrew, MD

Dr. Caroline Andrew is a physician at Hospital for Special Surgery, directing a medical weight management program. She is also an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. She is board certified in internal medicine and fellowship trained in obesity medicine.
Dr. Andrew completed her residency in internal medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College. She then went on to serve as a chief resident in the Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and complete a fellowship in obesity medicine at the Comprehensive Weight Control Center at Weill Cornell. Dr. Andrew received her undergraduate degree from Brown University and her medical degree from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Dr. Andrew’s practice helps patients meet their optimal weight loss goals through lifestyle modification, the use of medications, and minimally invasive procedures, ultimately benefiting their health, as well as improving their quality of life. She takes a personalized and compassionate approach to weight loss, performing an initial comprehensive assessment and tailoring recommendations to a patient’s specific history and presentation. Dr. Andrew is a firm believer in the implementation of individualized treatment plans in helping people lose weight and then maintain their weight loss.
Dr. Andrew has published in peer reviewed journals and presented at national conferences on the topic of obesity.

Dr. Canapp completed a combined DVM and Masters of Clinical Science in Surgery at Kansas State University in 1999. Upon graduation, Dr. Canapp completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Missouri, followed by a three-year residency in small animal surgery at the University of Florida. In 2004, Dr. Canapp became a member of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. In 2005, Dr. Canapp completed his certification in Canine Rehabilitation. Dr. Canapp has the extreme honor to be named a charter Diplomate in the newly recognized American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR) where he is Past President of the college.
Dr. Canapp completed his resident research, Masters research and advanced training in the treatment of joint diseases. Dr. Canapp is currently researching regenerative medicine; specifically, the use of stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma for the treatment of sports-related soft tissue injuries as well as osteoarthritis. Additionally, Dr. Canapp is a noted reviewer for many prominent scientific veterinary and human journals. He publishes and lectures frequently on the subjects of osteoarthritis, sports medicine, rehabilitation therapy, regenerative medicine and minimally invasive surgery, specifically arthroscopy. Due to the significant translational application of his work in regenerative medicine for soft tissue injuries he has had the honor of being an invited speaker and panelist at numerous human conferences including The Orthobiologic Institute Conference – TOBI (2015, 2016, 2017), The American Association of Orthopaedic Medicine Conference – AAOM (2017), and the International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Science – IFATS (2017).
Dr. Canapp currently practices orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at the Veterinary Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Group (VOSM) in Annapolis Junction, MD where he is owner and Chief of Staff. Dr. Canapp is also the President and CEO of Orthobiologic Innovations LLC, where he is actively engaged in concept and product design and development for orthopedic and arthroscopic devices, instrumentations, medical systems, biologics and regenerative medicine technologies. In 2015, Dr. Canapp established Project GO (Global Orthopedics for Animals). Project GO is a non-profit foundation dedicated to helping animals with musculoskeletal injuries from working dog government organizations, rescue organizations, wildlife organizations that have significant budget constraints as well as pet owners with financial hardship. In 2014, Dr. Canapp established The VOSM Academy, LLC educational training programs for veterinarians in the areas of sports medicine, regenerative medicine, rehabilitation therapy, diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, arthroscopic procedures.
Currently, Dr. Canapp and his wife, Dr. Debra Canapp (VOSM’s Medical Director and Director of Rehabilitation and Diagnostic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound), along with their daughters Allyson and Isabella and son Caden live in Howard County, where they share a home with their Doberman Ygritte, Border Collie Enzo and hairless cat, Decan. His personal interests include playing drums, racing cars, mountain biking and playing tennis.
Jonathan S. Kirschner, MD, RMSK

Dr. Kirschner is a board-certified specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR), Sports Medicine and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is also a registered musculoskeletal sonographer and uses ultrasound to both diagnose and treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions. He completed a subspecialty fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Interventional Pain Management and received the Earl C. Elkins award for achieving the highest score in the nation on the PMR board examination.
Dr. Kirschner’s goal is to restore function, reduce pain, and promote an active, healthy lifestyle using conservative measures whenever possible. He has won awards for his teaching skills while as a resident and attending physician. He lectures extensively locally and nationally, has edited the Atlas of Ultrasound Guided Musculoskeletal Injections and has written numerous peer reviewed journal articles and textbook chapters on the non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal disease.
His current research is in the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to treat tendinopathy. Other research interests include glenohumeral osteoarthritis and the role of PRP and hyaluronans, the efficacy of ultrasound guided procedures, novel uses for ultrasound in musculoskeletal medicine, evidenced based spine care, among others.

Leilani Alvarez, DVM, DACVSMR

Dr. Leilani Alvarez is the Director of the Tina Santi Flaherty Rehabilitation & Fitness Service and head of our Integrative and Rehabilitative Medicine Department. Dr. Alvarez is one of few specialists worldwide that is board certified in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation. She has been practicing rehabilitation medicine for over a decade. Her advanced training specializes her skills in diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue injuries such as joint injuries, ligament and tendon tears, and spinal injuries. Dr. Alvarez utilizes Integrative Medicine, which combines modern conventional approaches with Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Integrative Medicine includes therapies such as regenerative medicine (stem cells and platelet rich plasma), physical rehabilitation, acupuncture, spinal manipulation and herbal medicine, which help to increase the overall health of a patient and can often increase the success of conventional treatments.
Dr. Alvarez was the founder of a successful Integrative Medicine service at Katonah Bedford Veterinary Specialty Hospital prior to joining the staff of the AMC. She completed her rotating surgical and medicine internship and residency at AMC. She is also fluent in Spanish. Dr. Alvarez is a renowned national and international lecturer, research scientist, and accomplished author of peer-reviewed articles. She is the 2017 recipient of the prestigious John Sherman Award for Excellence in Veterinary Rehabilitation.
She leads one of only 5 accredited residencies nationwide for training residents in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation. Her research interests include soft tissue and sports injuries, geriatric medicine, joint supplements and nutraceuticals.
Jason Machowsky, MS, RD, RCEP, CSSD, CSCS

Jason Machowsky is a board-certified sports dietitian and registered clinical exercise physiologist who specializes in working with people post-rehab to return to sports, training or daily activities. He also specializes in nutrition and exercise guidance for those looking to maintain bone health. In his 14+ year career – including 8 at Hospital for Special Surgery – he has provided nutrition and training guidance to individuals encompassing a broad range of ages, exercise experience, injury history, sport and recreation.
Jason served as a member of the United States Olympic Committee Sports Dietitian Registry and has provided sports nutrition services for two D1 NCAA schools as Instructor of the Sports Nutrition Practicum at Teachers College. Jason has also presented on nutrition for endurance athletes and athletic recovery regionally and nationally including events for the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American College of Sports Medicine, and the NYC Marathon Expo. He is a reviewer for the “Nutrition and Rehabilitation” section of the Sports Nutrition Care Manual published by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and is the Past President of the Greater New York Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine. Jason received his Masters of Science degree in Applied Physiology and Nutrition from the Teachers College at Columbia University.

Dr. Kristin Kirkby Shaw is a small animal surgeon and rehabilitation specialist whose career has focused on bridging the gap between these two disciplines. Kristin received her DVM from the University of Florida (UF) in 2003, followed by a rotating internship at Veterinary Specialists of Northern Colorado, and a small animal surgery residency at the University of Florida. Kristin completed both her MS and Ph.D. at UF.
As a surgical resident, Kristin recognized the need for rehabilitation for her patients and took graduate courses in rehabilitation science, exercise science, and therapeutic modalities. She attended Northeast Seminars/ UT Canine Rehabilitation courses in 2007, followed by the Canine Rehabilitation Institute in 2008, where she became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT).
In 2009, she became board certified in veterinary surgery (DACVS-SA). Following her residency, she remained at UF as faculty in surgery and founded the University of Florida Small Animal Rehabilitation and Fitness Center (now part of the UF Small Animal Integrative Medicine Service). In 2010, she was awarded the Outstanding Young Alumni Award by UF. In 2013, she became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (DACVSMR).
Kristin has been a surgeon and rehabilitation specialist in Seattle since 2010. She practices at Animal Surgical Clinic of Seattle and is the Medical Director of SOUND Veterinary Rehabilitation Center, where she specializes in seeing dogs with hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament rupture, and arthritis.
Kristin is past-president of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians and is currently an instructor for the Canine Rehabilitation Institute. In 2018 she was the recipient of the John J. Sherman Award for Excellence in Veterinary Rehabilitation. She is a frequently invited speaker at national and international veterinary conferences and has authored numerous journal articles and textbook chapters related to veterinary surgery and rehabilitation. Kristin founded CARE in 2018 to provide valuable tools and resources for her clients and veterinary colleagues, as well as those caring for dogs with arthritis around the world.
She doesn’t leave the world of rehab behind when she goes home. Her husband, Aaron, is an occupational therapist/certified hand therapist and owner of MoveMend, a physical and occupational therapy practice focused on bridging the gap between injury and activity. Kristin and Aaron are proud parents of Beans (Frenchie) and Arrow (Labrador). In Kristin’s rare spare time she enjoys running, snowboarding, hiking, yoga, and travel.
Jessica Hooper, MD
Orthopedic Surgeon, Kaiser San Rafael Medical Center
Jessica Hooper M.D. is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement. Originally from Northern California, she earned her BS in physiology at the University of California Los Angeles and her MD at Michigan State College of Human Medicine, where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She went on to complete residency in orthopedic surgery at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, followed by a one-year fellowship in joint replacement at Stanford University. Her research has focused primarily on patient outcomes after hip and knee replacement, and application of new technology, such as 3D printing and virtual reality, to arthroplasty surgery. She is currently working at Kaiser San Rafael in Northern California and her practice focuses on primary hip and knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and complex revision hip and knee replacement surgery. In her free time, Dr. Hooper enjoys traveling, yoga, cooking, reading, and outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, cross country skiing, and snowboarding. You can also find her spending time with her 10 year-old Maine Coon cat, Richard.

Chris Zink obtained her DVM and PhD from the Ontario Veterinary College. She is a professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she teaches pathology and conducts AIDS research. She is also on the faculty of the Canine Rehabilitation Institute and gives seminars to veterinary professionals and dog owners around the world. She has been named Woman Veterinarian of the Year and her books have received accolades from the Dog Writers Association of America. Through her efforts, the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation was recently established as the newest specialty in veterinary medicine. In addition to her veterinary expertise, Chris has put over 100 titles in Agility, Obedience, Conformation, Tracking, Hunt Tests, Barn Hunt, Nosework, Coursing, and Rally on dogs from the Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier and Herding groups.
Chris Zink also has a consultation business in canine sports medicine and rehabilitation and is the author of several books on canine health including Peak Performance: Coaching the Canine Athlete, Canine Nutrition for Dummies, Jumping A to Z, and The Agility Advantage. Dr. Zink also is co-editor of the textbook, Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, 2nd Edition (Wiley, 2018).
Dr. Zink lectures nationally and internationally on the topic of canine sports medicine. She was named 2009 Outstanding Woman Veterinarian by the Association for Women Veterinarian Foundation and her book, The Agility Advantage, was voted Best Dog Publication of 2008.
Kathryn D. McElheny, MD

Dr. Kathryn McElheny is an Assistant Attending Physician at HSS. She is fellowship-trained and board certified in sports medicine and is the Non-operative Medical Director and Associate Team Physician for the New York Mets baseball team.
Dr. McElheny earned her undergraduate degree from Emory University before attending medical school at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. She completed her Pediatrics Residency and an additional Chief Resident year at Weill Cornell Medical Center. She remained in New York for her Primary Sports Medicine Fellowship here at HSS where she provided medical coverage for the New York Mets, New York Giants, and local high school football teams in addition to assisting with numerous other mass participation events ranging from local road races to Ironman Triathlons.
Her research focus has been on the use of strengthening in the prevention of overuse injuries experienced by novice marathon runners. She is also currently working on several studies evaluating injury incidence and prevention in professional and youth baseball players.
Dr. McElheny is committed to caring for athletes of all ages, levels and disciplines. In the context of her training and board certification in pediatrics, she is especially dedicated to managing injuries experienced by young athletes. In addition, she was a collegiate runner and is an avid baseball fan with a particular passion for treating runners and baseball athletes.
