Making a Plan for Your Pet

Who would care for your pets if something happened to you? In the chaos that frequently surrounds a person’s unexpected illness, accident, or death, pets are all too often overlooked. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to make a plan for your pets — and to write it down. Debra Hamilton is the Principal Attorney at Hamilton Law and Mediation in North Carolina (HLMNC). HLMNC uses understanding based alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methodologies to transform disagreements between people over animals. Debra facilitates discussion among the parties, helping provide them with neutral guidance that allows for the opportunity to choose peaceful conversation over litigation.

Her presentations are rooted in conflict transformation and self-reflection. Attendees learn more holistic ways of recognizing their own triggers, providing them with the ability to nip conflict in the bud.

Debra is an international speaker and best-selling author of Nipped in the Bud-Not in the Butt-How to Use Mediation to Resolve Conflicts over Animals.  She is a co-author of Onward and Upward: A Guide For Getting Through New York Divorce & Family Law Issues. She has an internationally received podcast, Why Do Pets Matter and holds an international pet planning community call, The MAAP Plan, every Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM US-ET. The MAAP Plan helps community members navigate the journey their pet takes when they can’t care for it.

She is a graduate of The Benjamin Cardozo Law School, and sits in an advisory position on the Boards of AVMLA, Fear Free, NOMV, AVDT and SVME. Debra is the go to person for information regarding the use of mediation in disagreements involving animals for the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Huffington Post, and US News and World Report.

She owns, breeds, and shows Irish Setters and Long haired standard Dachshunds under the prefix, Rumraisin.
