Clinical Signs

Salmonella

Salmonella can cause illness in both animals and humans coming into contact with contaminated products.

Humans

In humans, Salmonella infection can cause:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Fever

In rare instances, Salmonella can cause more serious conditions, including:

  • Arterial infections
  • Endocarditis (an infection of the heart muscle)
  • Arthritis
  • Muscle pain
  • Eye irritation
  • Urinary tract symptoms

If you have come into contact with any of the affected products, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling and sanitize any surfaces, dishes, containers, and/or utensils that may have touched the product.

If you or a loved experience any of the symptoms above, contact your healthcare provider.

Pets

In pets, Salmonella infection can cause:

  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased appetite
  • Abdominal pain

Infected pets can shed Salmonella in their feces and saliva, posing additional risk for family members, both human and animal.

If your pet has consumed any of the affected product, even if they are not showing signs of Salmonella infection, contact your veterinarian.

Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes (L. mono) is a bacterium that can cause severe and fatal illness in humans and animals, especially those who are pregnant, very young, very old, or have weak immune systems.

Humans

In humans, L. mono infection can cause symptoms including:

  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches

Although pregnant women may experience mild symptoms, such as those above, L. mono infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.

Pregnant women and their newborns, adults age 65+, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk, however anyone experiencing the symptoms above should contact their healthcare provider.

Pets

L. mono infection is uncommon in pets, but it is possible and can be fatal. Symptoms may include:

  • Mild to severe diarrhea
  • Anorexia
  • Fever
  • Nervous, muscular and respiratory signs
  • Abortion
  • Depression
  • Shock

Like Salmonella, infected pets can shed L. mono in their feces and saliva without showing signs of being sick, putting families at further risk.

If your pet has consumed any of the affected product, even if they are not showing signs of L. mono infection, contact your veterinarian.
