Litter box problems are among the most common behavioral concerns cat owners face, but many can be prevented with the right setup. AMC’s veterinary behaviorist, Dr. Vanessa Spano, DVM, DACVB, shares practical tips to help create a positive litter box experience for your cat.

Litter Box Setup for Success AMC Tips from Dr. Vanessa Spano, DVM, DACVB SINCE 1910 Schwarzman Animal Medical Center Usdan Institute for Animal Health Education BASIC HYGIENE • Scoop litter boxes at least once a day • Fully replace litter at least once a week • Wash boxes weekly with soap and warm water Avoid cleaners with phenols or harsh chemicals. Choose enzymatic cleaners instead (e.g., Anti-Icky Poo, Urine Off) TYPE OF LITTER BOX The litter box should be: • At least 1 ½ times your cat's body length • Wide enough for your cat to turn around • Low-sided for senior or arthritic cats * Have at least 1 litter box per cat, plus 1 extra LOCATION OF LITTER BOXES Place in different areas of your home • Avoid noisy or high-traffic areas • Avoid places "guarded" by bossy cats Make sure litter boxes are easy to access (no obstacles or closed doors) TEXTURE OF LITTER Use at least 2 inches of litter — cats need to dig! • Choose unscented litter with a soft texture • Offer multiple options to test preference: fine clay, silica crystals, or pellets * HINT: If your cat digs in the litter, it means they "dig" that litter!
