The Animal Medical Center is the largest post-graduate veterinary teaching institution with over 300 employees including over 80 veterinarians. The Center’s annual case load exceeds 50,000 visits and the Cardiology Residency Training Program draws upon this wealth of case material for teaching and clinical investigation.
The Animal Medical Center is nestled within Manhattan’s extensive biomedical community. Cardiology residents benefit by participation and attendance at cardiovascular conferences, rounds, and seminars. They are also involved in research collaboration with several prominent institutions, including Cornell University Medical College, New York Hospital and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The Cardiology Service functions within the Bobst Hospital of The Animal Medical Center and is affiliated with AMC’s Caspary Research institute.
Program Details
The Cardiology Residency Program benefits from a recently completed, multi-million dollar renovation of the teaching hospital including a new small animal clinic, animal inpatient and outpatient wards, ICU, radiology, ultrasound, and surgery facilities. Training consists primarily of supervised clinical activities including auscultation and physical examination; electrocardiography; cardiovascular radiography, angiocardiography, and thoracic CT; phonocardiography; echocardiography including color flow and Doppler echo; cardiac catheterization; interventional cardiovascular procedures including balloon valvuloplasty, vascular coil occlusion, pacemaker therapy; and cardiovascular pathology. Significant emphasis is placed upon performance and interpretation of specialized diagnostic studies and therapeutic management of heart disease. Requirements specified by ACVIM (Cardiology) for large animal cardiology training are satisfied during an out-rotation in collaboration with a School of Veterinary Medicine with suitable large animal caseload and clinical expertise. In the 1st year, cardiology training is integrated with internal medicine through rotations in cardiology, respiratory, ultrasound, gastroenterology, neurology and renal medicine sections. During the 2nd and 3rd years, major clinical focus is directed primarily on cardiology. Internal funds and support are provided to develop and conduct a research project. Opportunities to participate in ongoing clinical studies are encouraged.
The Cardiology Resident will be responsible for diagnosis and management of in-patient and outpatient cases. He/she is also expected to play an active role in mentoring and teaching interns and other trainees in cardiovascular diagnosis and therapy.
Benefits
The Animal Medical Center provides health and professional liability insurance, sick time, annual vacation, and board certification study time. New York State permit or license is required.
