Schwarzman Animal Medical Center Expands Anesthesia and Pain Management Service
Andrea Chivers, DVM, Appointed Senior Veterinarian
(November 15, 2022 – New York, N.Y.) The Stephen & Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC), the largest non-profit animal hospital in the world, today announced the expansion of its Anesthesia and Pain Management Service with the appointment of Andrea Chivers, DVM, as Senior Veterinarian.
Originally from Canada, Dr. Chivers earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ontario Veterinary College and completed a rotating specialty internship in emergency medicine at VCA California Veterinary Specialists in Carlsbad, California.
In her new role at AMC, Dr. Chivers will support the hospital’s comprehensive and collaborative care model by providing sedation and general anesthetic care to hospitalized patients. “I’m pleased to welcome Dr. Andrea Chivers to the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center family,” said Melissa Smith, DVM, PhD, DACVAA, Service Head of Anesthesia and Pain Management. “I am confident that Dr. Chivers will be a major asset to the department and make important contributions to our patient care.”
“It is such a privilege to work at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center,” said Dr. Chivers. “I’m so excited to work in the world’s largest non-profit animal hospital with such an extraordinary volume of patients spanning various species.”
The Anesthesia and Pain Management Service is vital to the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center’s multi- specialty veterinary practice where patients of varying species, breeds, and sizes require sedation and pain management for a variety of conditions and procedures, from routine dental cleanings to advanced surgeries and home care. AMC utilizes the most advanced medical equipment for the delivery of anesthesia and monitoring of patients, including:
- Invasive and non-invasive arterial blood pressure monitoring
- Continuous electrocardiography (ECG)
- Pulse oximetry to monitor patient oxygenation
- Capnography to monitor patient ventilation
- Mechanical ventilators
- Electrical nerve stimulation to allow specific nerve blockade for analgesia as well as monitoring of neuromuscular function during intra-operative paralysis
