New York City’s Schwarzman Animal Medical Center Sets a Record for Patient Visits in 2021
Nearly 60,000 Dogs, Cats, and Exotic Pets Treated by The World’s Largest Non-Profit Animal Hospital
Press Release
The Stephen & Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC), the largest non-profit animal hospital in the world, announced a record for annual patient visits in its 112-year history as a leading veterinary institution. 59,565 dogs, cats, and exotic pets were treated through AMC’s 20+ specialties and services, including 22,109 visits to AMC’s 24/7 Emergency Room, the only Level 1 Veterinary Trauma Center in New York City and the busiest animal emergency room in the country. The figures were just released in AMC’s 2021 Year of Comprehensive Care report, available at www.amcny.org/YOCC2021.
The increased demand for veterinary care at AMC reflects an industry-wide trend spurred by the pandemic boom in pet ownership. To meet demand, AMC is aggressively hiring clinical staff and recently broke ground on a transformative, $100 million renovation and expansion of its flagship Upper East Side location to increase patient capacity.
“The bond we share with our animal companions is unlike anything else,” said AMC’s Chief Executive Officer, Kathryn Coyne, “and I am so proud of our staff for meeting the exceptional challenges of the past year to provide lifesaving care to help keep so many pet families together. Our Gift of Love Capital Campaign and hospital renovation couldn’t come at a better time for AMC and for the companion animals of New York City.”
In addition to meeting record-breaking demand for veterinary care, AMC fulfilled its mission of charitable care, postgraduate education, and pioneering research by providing $4.5 million in donated care, welcoming 41 new veterinary interns and residents, and celebrating the publication of 39 peer-reviewed articles by AMC staff.
